ABSTRACT

This study compared the effect of an activator, intermediate bonding resin and low-viscosity flowable resin on the microtensile bond strength of a self-curing composite resin used with two-step total etching adhesives. Twenty extracted permanent molars were used. The teeth were assigned randomly to nine groups (n=10) according to the adhesive system and application of additional methods (activator, intermediate adhesive, flowable resin). The bonding agents and additional applications of each group were applied to the dentin surfaces. Self-curing composite resin buildups were made for each tooth to form a core, 5mm in height. The restored teeth were then stored in distilled water at room temperature for 24h before sectioning. The microtensile bond strength of all specimens was examined. The data was analyzed statistically by one-way ANOVA and a Scheffe's test. The application of an intermediate bonding resin (Optibond FL adhesive) and low-viscosity flowable resin (Tetric N-flow) produced higher bond strength than that with the activator in all groups. Regardless of the method selected, Optibond solo plus produced the lowest microTBS to dentin. The failure modes of the tested dentin bonding agents were mostly adhesive failure but there were some cases showed cohesive failure in the resin.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This study explores the effects of a tailored health promotion program, in order to reduce cardiovascular risk, in areas which include hypertension, dyslipidemia, abnormal blood glucose and body mass index. METHODS: In this paper, health risk appraisal relating to lifestyle was surveyed and physical fitness, blood pressure and blood lipid profile and glucose were checked. Then, a 12 week tailored health promotion program with 40 subway workers of Seoul was conducted. The Tailored health promotion program included a smoking cessation program, drinking restriction, diet, exercise prescription and a stress management program. RESULTS: The number of subjects engaging in regular exercise increased from 42.5% to 100%, and the number of smokers reduced from 72.5% to 60%, and 12.5% of contemplate stage was shift to action stage. The mean level of drinking per day, significantly decreased from 34.9 g to 24.2. The body mass index, systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, triglyceride, and Fasting blood glucose significantly decreased after the intervention program. In addition the tailored health promotion program resulted in a significant reduction in two factors for the cardiovascular high risk group, hypertension above 140 mmHg in systolic blood pressure and dyslipidemia above 200 mg/dl in triglyceride. CONCLUSION: In this paper, it is demonstrated that the tailored health promotion program,, including the smoking cessation program, drinking restriction, diet, exercise prescription and stress management program, resulted in effective reduction in cardiovascular risk factor. Therefore associated workplace tailored health promotion programs relating to specific individual risk factor, should be developed and implemented.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Allergen specific IgE (sIgE) assay is an important aid in the diagnosis and treatment of allergy. We evaluated the analytical performance of a quantitative chemiluminescence immunoassay for sIgE using the continuous random access ADVIA Centaur. METHODS: Six ADVIA Centaur sIgE reagents for common inhalant allergens in Korea, d1, d2, e1, e5, t3, and t7, were evaluated for precision, dilution recovery (parallelism), comparison with Pharmacia UniCAP sIgE assay and skin prick test, sample volume, and analytical speed according to the NCCLS guidelines (I/LA20-A, EP5-A2). Commercialized positive and negative quality control materials were used for a precision study, and samples from a total of 110 patients were used for dilution recovery and comparison studies. RESULTS: Within-run coefficients of variation (CV) of the 6 items were 3.45-6.14% and within-device CVs (total CVs) of all items were below 10%. Interdilutional CVs of all items were 2.84-11.95%, which showed a good linearity and parallelism over its measuring range. Positive/negative concordance rates of the 6 items with UniCAP sIgE assay were 76.3-96.1% (d1, 88.2%; d2, 96.1%; e1, 91.0%; e5, 77.0%; t3, 90.5%; and t7, 76.3%). Concordance rates of the six items with skin prick test were all above 80%. The quantity of sample volume (25 micro L/test) needed was relatively small, and a high throughput (120 tests/hr) and rapid turnaround time (47 min) could be achieved. CONCLUSIONS: The ADVIA Centaur sIgE assay was thought to be a convenient and efficient method to be used in medium- to large-sized laboratories.

ABSTRACT

Acute irradiation effects on the choroid plexus were studied. Healthy male rats (Sprague Dawley) were anesthetized with sodium thiopental, and were placed on the table of Mistubishi linear accelerator ML-4MV. The rats were irradiated on their heads and necks with the doses of 3,000 rads or 6,000 rads. Six hours, 2 days and 6 days following the irradiations, rats were sacrificed by perfusion fixation through the heart, with 1% glutaraldehyde-1% paraformalde-hyde solution. Choroid plexuses of lateral ventricles were taken out and fixed in the same fixative overnight, and were postfixed in 2% osmium tetroxide solution. Fixed tissue blocks were dehydrated within series of alcohol and acetone, and were embedded in araldite mixture. Ultrathin sections were cut, and contrasted with uranyl acetate and lead citrate solutions, and observed with electron microscope. The results obstained were as follows : 1. Choroid epithelial cells of irradiated rats exhibited severe alterations of their organelles concerning intracellular material transport; such as disappearance of microvilli and basal infoldings, reduction of invaginating pits on the basal and apical plasma membranes, reduction of transfer vesicles, shrinked Golgi complexes, etc. 2. In choroidal epithelial cells of the rats exposed with doses of 6,000 rads, the morphological alterations of the intracellular transport system were more severe than those of the rats exposed with doses of 3,000 rads. 3. Cellular elements and collagen fibrils within the pericapillary space were not so much affected following irradiations. 4. Zonula occludentes in between choroidal epithelials cells were not altered after the irradiations. The above results indicate that the production of cerebrospinal fluid by choroid plexus is severely reduced. Since the choroid plexus functions not only the secretions but it also concerns the homeostasis of many important ions, neuromodulaters, and other peptides, heavy irradiation on the head may result severe malfunction of central nervous system and humoral homeostasis.

ABSTRACT

It is reported the fact that there is high incidence of conversion hysteria in Korea compared with other country. Many authors has stressed the importence of the possibity of hysteria when the patient complained of visual disturbance, visual field change and ocular discomfortness without any organic change of the eye. Author presented a case of conversion hysteria, 13years old male with chief complain of sudden severe visual disturbance, concentric constriction of the periperal visual field change and pseudomyopIa. He had treated at other eye clinics with the diagnosis of pseudomyopia or optic neuritis without improvement of ocular abnormalities over a year. Every efforts such as corrective glasses, systemic administration of steroids were failed. Finally author consulted this patient with the impression of conversion hysteria to the psychiatry department. All of ocular abnormalities were completly recorvered after treatment at the psychiatry department.

ABSTRACT

Authors presented clinical review of the corneal multiple punctate epithelial erosions on the causative classification, location, form and therapy. Also authors classified essential multiple punctate epithelial erosions in sex and age. The results obtained as follow; 1. The major cause of the multiple punctate epithelial erosions were known due to traumatic origin by many authors. However, in our clinical cases it was revealed 67 cases (58%) were due to unknown cause. 2. The high incidence of this disease was noted in female (55 cases, 82%) than that of male. (12 cases, 18%) 3. The occupational study of the patients was not significant. 4. Extensive therapy such as instillation of topical steroid, Tathion eye drop, subconjuntival injection of Tathion and wearing of therapeutic soft contact lens on the multiple punctate epithelial erosions was effective in 30 cases. (46%) But recurrent was noted in 6 cases (9.2%) which respond to the therapy, while 10 eyes (15.4%) recurred among unresponded group.

ABSTRACT

Authors presented the clinical review and evaluated the therapeutic response to 20 eyes of filamentary keratitis observed at the Department of Ophthalmology, St. Mary's Hospital for last 3 years. 1. The filaments disappeared within 2 days in 11 eyes by mechanical debriment with 0.5% C-M eyedrops, tear substitutes and prednisolone eye drops. 2. 4 of 20 eyes showed disappearance of the filaments within 3 days by the subconjunctival tathion injection combined with instillation of tathion eye drops. 3. For one eye which was resistant to the above therapy treated with continuous wearing of the B and L soft contact lens. In this case the filaments reduced in number from one day and completely disappeared after 6 days' wearing of soft contact lens. Patient discontinued the wearing of soft contact lens one week after. No epithelial filaments have appeared after discontinuance in wearing of the soft contact lens one week later.
